Wisdom and quote of the week 7-16-2008

Hey all, due to some life impatience and laziness no wisdom or quote this week. I have some wisdom perkulateng and I will pour you a cup next week. I will give you a mostly quick update on my life (or lack their of)

Karen refuses to become Korean , so now I have to figure out all the cultural references to my favorite Korean drama/love story/comedy on my own. Ok the only Korean drama/love story/comedy I have scene. Called “Coffee Prince” or
“The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince” I’ll try to do a review latter. It’s Amazingly good.

Finally sold my fathers old car, so I have a bit of cash floating around now. That’s good because I have like 200 dollars in Pre-orders on Amazon.

I also might be getting a gob at the local UPS store. Not as cool as PDQ Mail plus but I will live (we had a better coffee shop near the store).

Have applied for a job for the city of Milford. Don’t think I will get it but brushing up on excel and learning Access. Access hurts my brain…..

Currently figuring out if I want to go to Connecti Con in August 1 -3. Connecticon.org
I want to see the Musical on Friday as my buddy Halden is in at as the Marnarc from Venture Brother (he looks awesome !!!) but bit of a waste for that. Saturday is the BIG day of stuff, but not sure what stuff is. They don’t list it on the web site. So I will debate it for a few more weeks. Also please follow the advice to the link below about cons.

Started to work on my new short story again. Thinking of totally redoing it. By “totally” is moving bits around and adding more me to it.

Amazingly have started my X-mas / Dec. birthday / Hanukkah shopping.
I have 3 left to buy / 2 pick out

“Comic Book Tattoo” will be coming out soon one of the few things I am actually excited about. Also the “Umbrella Academy” Hardcover that comes out in October.
I also have Umbrella Academy umbrella on order as well. I like the concept of an umbrella with a pitcher of an umbrella on it. You know incase I forget what it is (or something).

Karen finds me the sweetest boy ever and I like her too even though she refuses to be Korean. And one day she will send out my V-day gift.

Still working on becoming a Freemason. Not to be confused with a strawmason and a woodmason in witch the big bad wolf already blew down.

Much love see you in 7 Mark Boss

    Quote of the Week

Bit of a set up. My Buddies plans fell through for his usual weekly group activity
(sorry no sex story). So He wanted to hang out and I knew why it fell through. Her is the fun tail end of that conversation.

My Buddy: “Yes... how did you know?? Are you still stalking that girl??”

Me: “If I was a stalker she would be ducked taped in my basement now.”

My Buddy: “Now *that's* the truth! (And the danger of blogging one's entire life...)”

(ok I’m a bit tired and cranky)

Writing… I have started writing short stories (ok - on my third). Have no clue if I will be a good writer but I have noticed something, or something I have noticed and can now put into words.

Sometimes a story is well written but a poorly conceived idea. Other times it’s a great idea but poorly written (happens with my posts sometimes).

Granted some stories fail at both (Sci-Fi channel presents….).

It seems a good story has to be well written or at lest understandable and have somewhat plausible events.

    example:

Their was a TV show called “The Starlost” (its on youtube). It is well written well as the dialogue is digestible but the concept is poor. Why you would make children immortal and not their teachers is beyond me…then again why would you make children immortal is beyond me.

“Just imagine Stan Lee creating the DC Universe” Aquaman concept was ok. He was a man made of water but the script was reaching at times and tried to force events.
My “favorite” part is when he feels like a freak because he can turn into a person made of water but was ok with being shot up with fish DNA to make himself more like them…WTF.

Sarcasm Seen as Evolutionary Survival Skill

    Meredith F. Small
    LiveScience's Human Nature Columnist
    LiveScience.com
Fri Jun 20, 9:45 AM ET

Humans are fundamentally social animals. Our social nature means that we interact with each other in positive, friendly ways, and it also means we know how to manipulate others in a very negative way.

Neurophysiologist Katherine Rankin at the University of California, San Francisco, has also recently discovered that sarcasm, which is both positively funny and negatively nasty, plays an important part in human social interaction.

    So what?

I mean really, who cares? Oh for God's sake. Don't you have anything better to do that read this column?

According to Dr. Rankin, if you didn't get the sarcastic tone of the previous sentences you must have some damage to your parahippocampal gyrus which is located in the right brain. People with dementia, or head injuries in that area, often lose the ability to pick up on sarcasm, and so they don't respond in a socially appropriate ways.

Presumably, this is a pathology, which in turn suggests that sarcasm is part of human nature and probably an evolutionarily good thing.

How might something so, well, sarcastic as sarcasm, be part of the human social toolbox?

Evolutionary biologists claim that sociality is what has made humans such a successful species. We are masters at what anthropologists and others call "social intelligence." We recognize and keep track of hundreds of relationships, and we easily distinguish between enemies and friends.

More important, we run our lives by social calculation. A favor is mentally recorded and paid back, sometimes many years later. Likewise, insults are marked down on the mental score card in indelible ink. And we are constantly bickering and making up, even with people we love.

Sarcasm, then, is a verbal hammer that connects people in both a negative and positive way. We know that sense of humor is important to relationships; if someone doesn't get your jokes, they aren't likely to be your friend (or at least that's my bottom line about friendship). Sarcasm is simply humor's dark side, and it would be just as disconcerting if a friend didn't get your snide remarks.

It's also easy to imagine how sarcasm might be selected over time as evolutionarily crucial. Imagine two ancient humans running across the savannah with a hungry lion in pursuit. One guy says to the other, "Are we having fun yet?" and the other just looks blank and stops to figure out what in the world his pal meant by that remark. End of friendship, end of one guy's contribution to the future of the human gene pool.

Fast forward a few million years and the network of human relationships is wider and more complex, and just as important to survival. The corporate chairman throws out a sarcastic remark and those who "get" it laugh, smile, and gain favor. In the same way, if the chair never makes a remark, sarcastic people are making them behind his or her back, forming a clique by their mutually negative, but funny, comments. Either way, sarcasm plays a role in making and breaking alliances and friendship.

Thanks goodness, because life without out sarcasm would be a dull and way too nice place to be, if you ask me.

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.”

    Wisdom of the week.

Looking over some old emails and documents and I came upon several interesting notions I had put forth to other people.

“You don’t go looking for love, love finds you.”

This is true and it is false. If you are looking for love sometimes you find it. One of my buddies went looking on Match . com and he found it with in a year. Took him a bit longer to get to the alter but that’s another story. Heard of another person on the same web site and just when about to give up hope he found what most seek. One friend just placed an order for it. Ok untrue. He was looking for a hook-up and was introduced to whom would be his wife one day. I don’t know if any of them were looking for a deep and true love at the time but they went searching for companionship and found it.

Another thing I said was something to the point

“You can not catch light in a well of darkness”

One girl I was friends with a while back (she hates me now-sadness) was looking for love (light) in the goth scene (darkness) were people to a point, just think of themselves and their needs. Four years latter she is still looking.
As she is a fantastic person, sooner of latter she will trip over her hearts desire.

So I think you can look for love but the right place does help and a healthy helping hand of fate / luck.

Want to get rid of some fat cells as you age? Fat chance.

You're stuck with the number of fat cells you have acquired by about age 20, a new study finds.

Researchers have known that people gain and lose weight at least in part by changing how much fat is in their fat cells. The new finding is particularly important for obese people, who the researchers say can have twice as many fat cells as their lean counterparts.

The finding also suggests that obesity in adulthood is at least partly determined by diet and exercise in childhood.

    Strange study

To determine the age of fat cells in 35 subjects, researchers focused on a marker found in fat cells - radioactive carbon from above-ground nuclear bomb tests in the 1950s and 60s. More of a naturally occurring but rare type of carbon, called carbon-14, was produced during the testing.

Bruce Buchholz, a chemist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., explained how his team used this marker to make their discovery.

Our bodies incorporate carbon-14 from the food we eat, along with the vastly more abundant types called carbon-12 and 13. Since carbon-14 from the testing is decreasing with time as it mixes with the oceans, the amount of rare carbon-14 that a cell has taken up is like a timestamp for when the cell formed, Buchholz said.

The researchers knew that cells were dying and being replaced over time, because people born before the nuclear testing had fat cells that were created after the testing. The scientists also found that about 10 percent of fat cells were replaced every year whether or not a person was obese.

Despite that replacement rate, another aspect of the study with a larger sample of people revealed that the total number of fat cells per person remained relatively constant over time. Even extreme weight-loss strategies, such as bariatric surgery, did not reduce the number of fat cells in study subjects.

    Aha!

The tightly regulated number of fat cells in adulthood may explain why it seems easy to gain back lost weight, Buchholz said.

If you already have more fat cells from adolescence than other people, "it's harder to become thin," Buchholz told LiveScience.

The study raises a new mystery: Something tells the body to make a new fat cell when another dies, Buchholz said. In the future, if scientists could interfere with this turnover, they might actually reduce fat-cell number in adults, he said.

The findings, detailed in the May 4 online issue of the journal Nature, suggest that the focus for controlling obesity should be on children, said Dr. Jeffrey Gimble, who studies fat stem cells at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge and was not involved in the research. The idea is that if the number of fat cells is capped by age 20, then the smart approach is to prevent their formation in children.

Obesity prevention in the early years could have "a lifetime impact," Gimble said.
